The Kremslehner Hotels have a fascinating and eventful history dating back to the 19th century.
A Legacy of Hospitality
and Culture
In 1853, two things happened that are important for the history of Hotel Regina: There was an assassination attempt on Emperor Franz Joseph I and Georg Kremslehner was born in St. Valentin in Lower Austria. The former laid the foundations for the construction of the Votive Church and the surrounding buildings, including Palais Angerer. The Palais Angerer also accommodated the “Alt Pilsenetzer Bierhalle”, where Georg Kremslehner first worked as a waiter and met his future wife Christine.
Together they obtained the lease for the “Alt Pilsenetzer Bierhalle” in 1896 and received the hotel license in 1907, bought the Palais Angerer and gradually transformed it into an elegant metropolitan hotel, the Hotel Regina. They also succeeded in acquiring two other hotels in Vienna’s city center, the Graben Hotel and the Hotel Royal.

After Georg’s death in 1930, his youngest son Rudolf took over the management of the hotels and, together with his brothers Georg and Fritz, led it through the difficult times of the Second World War. During the occupation until 1952, the Hotel Regina served as the headquarters of the Americans and was then renovated from the ground up.
Since 1976, the Kremslehner Hotels have been managed and continuously developed by Dr. Peter Kremslehner, a passionate opera fan. The close connection to art and culture not only led to economic success, but also to the Hotel Regina becoming a home away from home for many artists and travelers. In addition, the Hotel Regina also established itself as a popular meeting place for Viennese and as a venue for premiere celebrations in the theater scene.

In 2011, the Kremslehner family acquired the Hotel Johann Strauss in Favoritenstrasse near Karlskirche. After a break of 80 years, the Kremslehner family expanded its portfolio with another hotel in a central location.
Vera Kremslehner-Braunegg, Eva Kremslehner and Wolfgang Kremslehner currently manage the Kremslehner Hotel Group, consisting of the Hotel Regina, the Hotel Royal, the Graben Hotel and the Hotel Johann Strauss. By emphasizing innovation and sustainability, they are continuing the tradition of hospitality in the 4th generation
